VISUALIZE DATA AT STATE AND SUB-STATE LEVELS

Use the tool to view physician supply, healthcare service use, and shortages/surpluses at the national, state, and sub-state levels.

PROJECT THE EFFECT OF MEDICAID EXPANSION

Use the tool to project how the utilization of health care services will change under different assumptions about Medicaid expansion.

UTILIZATION, SUPPLY, SHORTAGE/SURPLUS
TO 2030

Use the tool to examine how physician supply, healthcare service use, and shortages/surpluses will change between 2013-2030 under different scenarios.

THE PROJECT

The FutureDocs Forecasting Tool estimates the supply of physicians, the use of physician services, and the capacity of the physician workforce to meet future health service use at the sub-state, state, and national levels. The model’s purpose is not to generate one single "right" estimate of future workforce needs but to be used as a tool that engages policy makers, clinicians and others in simulating the effect that workforce policy changes will have on the future supply and adequacy of the physician workforce. The model’s open source design is intended to serve as "sandbox" where workforce modelers and other stakeholders can interact with one another to improve the data, assumptions, and methodological approaches used in physician workforce projections.

The Program on Health Workforce Research and Policy at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, developed the tool in partnership with the North Carolina Medical Society Foundation and financial support from the Physicians Foundation.
